Death and the Sea I: Florence Montmare

1610,00 € – 2300,00 €

Homage to Ingmar Bergman. Swedish-American visual artist Florence Montmare takes an artistic, introspective journey set against cinematic landscape on the remote island Fårö, Sweden. Montmare stages overarching themes of human conditions through images of invented scenarios, rituals, and performances set against stripped down natural elements, allowing a contemplation of the rocks and sea to function as a mirror, and in reflection to see the essence of yourself. Death and the Sea series is an exclusive collectible from the Nordic Village exhibition Scenes from an Island by Montmare at the Summer Yard of National Museum of Finland in 2020.

“Florence Montmare’s photos spark the imagination, documenting what is there and suggesting what is not. Her work is both provocative and evocative. She is a master photographer.” —Julia Cameron, author, The Artists Way

Description

The overarching themes of Scenes from an Island are the human conditions of displacement and transience, played out against Ingmar Bergman’s mise-en-scène, the stark cinematic landscape on the remote island of Fårö, Sweden. There, natural elements are stripped down and laid bare, allowing a contemplation of the rocks and water to function as a mirror, and in reflection, you are able to see an essence of yourself. In light of the extraordinary circumstances in which we find ourselves today, this body of work resonates even more with me now than five years ago, when Montmare initially conceived it. Making this work came from a desire to pause and contemplate, away from distraction and convenience. Art and nature have the capacity to heal, transcend and transform. Montmare hopes these images can open up a breathing space for personal interpretations and discoveries.
